Low frequency observations of supernova remnants in M 82
We have used MERLIN at 408 MHz to image the central starburst region of M82 with a resolution of 0.5 arcsec. We detect 20 supernova remnants at this frequency which is a much smaller number than we detect at higher frequencies (50). We attribute this diierence to free-free absorption by ionised gas. We nd that 7 remnants show low-frequency turnovers in their spectra consistent with free-free ab...
متن کاملShell-type Supernova Remnants
The role of Supernova Remnants (SNRs) for the production of the Galactic Cosmic Rays is reviewed from the point of view of theory and very high energy gamma-ray experiments. The point is made that theory can describe young SNRs very well, if the evidence from the synchrotron emission is used to empirically determine several parameters of the theory, and thus theory can predict the relative cont...
متن کاملSupernova Remnants and GLAST
It has long been speculated that supernova remnants represent a major source of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. Observations over the past decade have ceremoniously unveiled direct evidence of particle acceleration in SNRs to energies approaching the knee of the cosmic ray spectrum. Nonthermal X-ray emission from shell-type SNRs reveals multi-TeV electrons, and the dynamical properties of several SN...
متن کاملNew Insights into Core–Collapse Supernova Theory
Though it is agreed that the post–bounce, pre–explosion cores of massive stars are unstable to transonic, Rayleigh–Taylor–like instabilities, the role convective motions may play in igniting the supernova explosion itself is not yet clear. Whatever that role, the morphology and nucleosynthetic yields of the explosion, the recoil of the protoneutron star, the spatial distribution of fresh Ni, an...
متن کاملNeutron Stars in Supernova Remnants
In the following, we shall briefly summarize some facts and ideas concerning the presence of neutron stars in Supernova remnants. While sources similar to the Crab Nebula require the presence of a central energetic object, shell-type remnants such as Cas A are compatible with the presence of neutron stars releasing a weak relativistic wind. Supernova remnants are usually classified into two ext...
